Can you hide your name from facebook instant messenger?

I like to go to facebook without being seen on instant messenger because sometimes I don’t want to chat with my friends. I don’t want to ignore them but when I am online it seems like thats what I am doing when I don’t chat. How to remove my name from the instant messenger so they won’t know I am on-line?

Yes. There is a graphic of a little green slide bar. Press that and you should be offline to all those that are in that group. But then you won’t really know if their online either.

Click on the chat, move your mouse over to Options and select Go Offline.
Click on the messenger, click options on the top and then "go offline"
