How Can I Download ringtones and music to my env3?

I want to download ringtones and music to my env3. I want to buy a usb cord for my phone off ebay. There is a universal one available that comes with a sync disk (CD). Do I need a Cd or a disk to be able to sync my phone with my computer and download ringtones and music. Or will it work if I just plug it in without a disk???
